I installed Typekit on my website this afternoon to see what options are available for moving beyond the default "safe" fonts commonly deployed on today's web browsers. After I activated Drupal's "Font Your Face" module, which provides an API for Typekit, I signed up for a free Typekit account where I was able to select from an albeit limited range of typefaces.
Although grid systems are quite common in print media, only recently has the web harnessed the full power of grid-based layouts. A consistent approach has taken a while to infiltrate the web design community, most likely because up until now there hasn't been a standard method of streamlining workflows.
One of my favourite design books is Making and Breaking the Grid: A Layout Design Workshop by Timothy Samara. It stresses not only the importance of using grid based layouts, but also demonstrates their versatility, especially when a designer chooses to cleverly break the rules(!)
Typography on websites can be a challenge, given how every browser tends to render objects differently, and how only a small number of web-friendly fonts are available.
In a traditional print environment, designers theoretically enjoy complete freedom over the layout and presentation of typographical elements on the page (so long as they know how to operate software packages such as InDesign). By contrast, websites require special coding, using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) that adhere to specific standards developed by the W3C consortium. Unfortunately, the default standards as they appear on today's web browsers aren't necessarily the most pleasing to the eye.
Well, this is my first blog entry on a brand new website to promote my design work and services, which I will be developing over the next several months.
I consider this blog to be part of my professional development, but also as a personal notebook for storing creative ideas, along with articles on new trends and best practices. Most of the entries will comment on my experience using various technologies in the design field, such as the platform that is driving this current website: Drupal 7.
